A life of service
and quiet courage.

Born in Chennai in 1858, Mary Grace became Sr. Teresa of St. Rose of Lima — a teacher, and later the founder of a congregation devoted to the poor and marginalised.

  • 1858

    Born in Chennai to devout Catholic parents; educated by her father after her mother's early death.

  • 1886

    Began teaching at a struggling school in Alleppey, Kerala, and quickly turned it into a success.

  • 1887

    Founded the Congregation of Carmelite Sisters of St. Teresa in Ernakulam, serving the needy and oppressed.

  • Legacy

    Built a 'civilization of love' — caring for the sick, destitute and famine-hit through selfless service.

  • 1902

    Passed away in a tragic accident; her congregation carried her mission forward.

  • Today

    Over 120 branches worldwide — schools, hospitals and homes — living 'Empowerment through Education'.
